THE BENEFITS OF ONE-PHASE IMPLANTS – ORAL REHABILITATION

What are the most valuable benefits of one-phase implants? How is oral rehabilitation done?

We have written several times about the importance of well-kept, healthy teeth since the lack of teeth is not primarily an aesthetic defect but can even pose a serious health risk. You can read more about the harmful effects of neglected teeth on general health here. You need to have your bad teeth treated, and if they are no longer suitable for prosthetic care, they must be removed and replaced as soon as possible. There are two types of tooth replacement solutions. One is traditional; the other is an implant-based denture. Our specialty is oral rehabilitation with dental implants under general anesthesia, so this article focuses on the benefits of one-phase implants and oral rehabilitation with them.

Dental implant families
A dental implant is a screw made of high-purity titanium alloy, which can replace the natural tooth root when implanted in the tooth or jawbone. Two families of implants are in use in Hungary. The older and most common is the traditional two-phase implant; the newer, more advanced technology is the one-phase implant, which is loadable immediately after insertion. Although there are significant differences between implants and the way their implantation, they are also the same; both are perfectly suitable to replace the natural tooth root. In the past, we also performed implant-based tooth replacements with two-phase implants, but due to the definite advantages of the one-phase implant and implantation method, it is clear that the future belongs to such implants.

Some of the benefits of a one-phase implants
The one-phase implant is implantable in a single phase. It means the removal of teeth unsuitable for dental treatment and the implantation of the implant. Next is the sampling of the long-term temporary denture, which takes place on the same day during a single procedure. That benefits rural people and foreigners, as they can save on travel and accommodation costs. The two-phase implant implantation occurs in two phases on two separate occasions.

The one-phase implant is an immediate loading implant. That means, among other things, that a long-term temporary denture is attachable to the implants a few days after the implantation. In practice, the temporary denture is ready within a few days after the implantation. The long-term temporary denture provides bite and chewing strength similar to the original teeth. Of course, it requires more attention in the first weeks. Understand that the new set of teeth should not be overstretched by strong biting or chewing.

Another advantage of the benefits of one-phase implants is that it consists of a single piece, which has many positive effects. Since there are no additional elements like a two-phase implant, it costs slightly less. Implantation is more straightforward, safer, and takes less time than two-phase. If the implant needs to be changed later, it is possible more quickly and with less discomfort than with a two-phase implant.

The one-phase implant is implantable not only in the tooth bone but also in the jaw bone. It is essential in the case of bone deficiency, as it is implantable in areas of the jawbone where the two-phase cannot. On the other hand, the two-phase implant can only be implantable in the tooth bone. This feature of the immediate loading implant allows for a much broader application.

The one-phase implant is insertable at a different angle than just perpendicularly. It is also essential in case of bone deficiency because it enables access to the bone tissue most suitable for implant placement. There is no such possibility with two-phase.

The use of a one-phase implant - due to the reasons listed so far - most likely makes bone replacement unnecessary. No bone replacement is usually necessary when using a one-phase implant. Of course, there is so tiny and insufficient bone that even one-phase implantation is only possible with preliminary bone replacement. These were the most important advantages of the one-phase immediate loading implant.

The procedure of oral rehabilitation under anesthesia with a one-phase implant
Consultation with the anesthesiologist, anesthesia
If the laboratory and ECG test results are adequate, the consultation with the anesthesiologist begins. During this, the anesthesiologist asks the patient questions about the anesthesia and provides information about the anesthesia. If everything is OK from this point of view, then the anesthesia begins, and with it, the operation itself.

Removal of teeth unsuitable for prosthetic treatment
In most cases, the patient's oral cavity contains teeth that are problematic for dental care. Those must be removed before the implantation begins. Tooth extraction is usually smooth, but it may happen that, for example, a dead wisdom tooth only has its root in the tooth's bone, which is a little more challenging to remove.

One-phase implant implantation
The most important part of the intervention is the implantation of the one-phase implants in both jawbones in the case of upper, lower, or full mouth rehabilitation. The one-phase implant goes through the gums into the tooth bone or, if necessary, into the jaw bone. By current needs, we usually insert 8-10 implants per jaw.

After the implantation, a panoramic X-ray is taken because the implantologist oral surgeon has to ensure everything is fine with the implant. The implantologist must ensure that every implant is in place and in the manner indicated in the implantation plan. The sutures removal occurs 5-6 days later.

Long-term temporary dentures
The first part of oral rehabilitation ends with preparing and delivering the long-term temporary denture. The patient must appear for a control examination the day after the implantation. If necessary, further control examinations are possible until the suture removal. The sutures removal occurs after 5-6 days, and a sample is taken for the metal framework made by our dental technician, which holds the temporary denture.

The main topic of our article was the benefits of one-phase implants. In addition, we discussed the different tooth replacement options and the main characteristics of the various implant families. And finally, we explained the process of one-phase implant-based oral rehabilitation. If you have further questions, please visit our homepage or contact us.
